Two teams promoted their own offensive coordinators: the New York Giants with Ben McAdoo and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with Dirk Koetter.

Three hired someone else’s offensive coordinator: the Cleveland Browns with Cincinnati’s Hue Jackson, the Dolphins with Chicago’s Adam Gase and the Philadelphia Eagles with Kansas City’s Doug Pederson. The 49ers hired Chip Kelly, the offensive-minded head coach fired by the Eagles. The Tennessee Titans made their former offensive assistant turned interim coach, Mike Mularkey, their full-time coach.

This time, facing a tough third-and-17, USC opts to run the ball in effort to not lose any extra yards before they punt. Foster spots something he must have recognized from film study, because he quickly swaps position with his fellow linebacker before charging down to the line of scrimmage. Foster bursts through the line of scrimmage, forcing the pulling right guard to try to pick him up. The guard does his best to run Foster past the back, but Foster works around the guard and grabs on to the back, making the tackle for a loss.

The Titans’ schedule isn’t all that much harder. After Thursday night’s game in Pittsburgh, Tennessee gets a four-game stretch featuring the Colts, Texans, Cardinals and 49ers. At this point it’s safe to say that the Jacksonville-Tennessee division loser will claim one of the AFC’s wild-card spots, leaving the Bills and just about everyone else in the AFC to battle for the last one.

Frankly, the only team that we can probably eliminate from the AFC playoff race is winless Cleveland. Everyone else is within 2 1/2 games of the Bills, currently holding down the final wild-card spot. But these three are closest.

The Washington Redskins have the 17th overall pick, and nine other picks — a second-round selection, (49th) a third (81st), two fourth-rounders (114, 123), one fifth (154), two sixth-rounders (201, 209) and two seventh-round picks (220, 235).

How should the Redskins use those picks? Do they have to go defense? Should they add another running back, or a quarterback for the future? We hash it all out here in our final draft debate. Master, if you’re sitting there at 17, what’s your call?cowboys_030

The Cavs fell 148-124 to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday, tying a franchise record for most points allowed in regulation.

I think the biggest thing that can happen is can’t no one be sensitive to whatever it needs to be, Wade said. There’s [for example] 13 things that’s wrong and coach decides to point out one thing and you’re the one that he points out, you can’t be sensitive to it. You’ve got to understand that you can be better and this can be done better. We have to take accountability. I think we want it because we want to win. We’re looking for it. So hopefully in these next few weeks before the All-Star break we can start getting a little more accountable to ourselves and to this team and just play a little better.

I’m sure everybody’s handling it their own way, Dwyane Wade said. Some might handle it with a couple bottles of wine, some may handle it other ways. But only speaking on my behalf as a competitor, these times suck. These times are the times that make everything else, you understand the importance of winning games, you understand how hard it is to win championships. It makes you appreciate things when you go through the tough times.

Mike Cernovich, a right wing firebrand and conspiracy theorist, dubbed Papa John’s America’s pizza in a tweet thanking the company. (It’s unclear for what, exactly.)

Schnatter, in the earnings call, blamed poor NFL leadership — not the players directly — for hurting Papa John’s shareholders because of the league’s failure to resolve the current debacle to the player’s and owner’s satisfaction.

Following one of the most inept defensive performances in Cavaliers history, LeBron James said his team looked primed for a short postseason appearance, barring any changes.

They are 3-9 since Christmas Day.

Playoffs? We can’t even start thinking about that, not the way we’re playing right now, James said. We could easily get bounced early in the playoffs if they started next weekend. Haven’t even began thinking about the postseason.

NFL playoffs: Picks, predictions for wild-card games

The NFL playoffs, which conclude Feb. 4 with Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, begin Saturday and Sunday with wild-card weekend.

And we have some fresh faces this year.

Fans are at the core of the football experience and it’s truly exciting and rewarding when they band together, regardless of the team they cheer for, to make a positive impact in the lives of others, Bortles said in a statement. I greatly appreciate the support displayed by Bengals fans and they should know their support will make a difference.

They crashed headlong into the offseason, instead, and now Smith goes from franchise quarterback to prime asset. Coach Andy Reid played his cards close to the vest when he spoke Sunday, the day after the 22-21 collapse against the Titans. He praised Mahomes, his potential and his swift learning curve, as well as what he gleaned from playing behind Smith, but added, I am not there with anything other than that. That is what is real right now.

The irony of the quarterback situation in Kansas City is that Smith wasn’t the reason the Chiefs disappeared offensively in the second half against Tennessee (lay that in the laps of Reid and play-caller Matt Nagy, who was hired Monday as the Chicago Bears new coach). The Chiefs are loaded at the skill positions with young talent, who emerged and dominated quickly.

The Patriots and Steelers enjoyed first-round byes in the AFC while the Eagles and Vikings were the top seeds in the NFC. The Eagles, playing without injured quarterback Carson Wentz, have had a week to try to fix the offense. Philadelphia did have the NFL’s fourth-ranked defense and may need a defensive score to keep pace with the Falcons, who have won four of their last five.

Bryant’s first son died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) at the age of three months, which came prior to a 2008 game against the Packers. To honor Matthew Tryson’s memory, Bryant decided to play. He made three field goals to help lift the Bucs to victory. Bryant was later voted by teammates as Tampa Bay’s 2008 Ed Block Courage Award winner.

The Bucs might not be cursed by the persistent kicking woes that linger to this day had they committed to Bryant. Instead, a new regime post-Jon Gruden cut Bryant during the 2009 preseason after he was sidelined for a month with a hamstring injury. Bryant wasn’t even re-signed after his replacement, Mike Nugent, was waived after a lousy four-game stretch.

Super Bowl national anthem 2018: Pink will perform before kickoff

The NFL announced on Monday morning that Pink (stylized P!NK) will be singing the national anthem at Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis on Sunday, Feb. 4.

This attitude seems more suited for a tennis player or a golfer than the star of a team sport. Even at the highest level you are likely to find yourself relying on people who do not quite match your dedication—and intensity. That reality baffled him as a child, which is perhaps why he found himself hanging out mostly with kids from his honors classes or debate club. He was popular and well liked, but he could not understand why teammates bristled when he called out poor effort. Didn’t they see that he was just trying to help?

The Bills might make the playoffs, but I don’t see how they could beat the Steelers or Patriots on the road, and I think the Chargers are clearly better. Making the playoffs at 8-8 or 9-7 in one of the worst years the AFC has had in a long time should not be much of a positive sign for the Bills.

It resulted in a fantastic call by Sean McDonough, who sounded like he was trying to eject his lungs on the call. Everybody noticed.

The play was blown dead, and the Chiefs used a timeout to stop the clock. It wouldn’t matter, however, as the Titans would get another first down to secure the 22-21 win.

It was another legendary voice crack of a call by McDonough:

The Chiefs lead the game 21-3 at halftime, but the Titans roared back and ultimately got the win.

It’s not a stretch to think that this opportunity with the Arizona Coyotes is the best he’s had, considering the position the lineup he’s being placed and the linemates he is centering.

Cobb proved he wasn’t a true No.Here’s the breakdown: Beyond that, the Mariners had 21 outings where the starter pitched four innings or less.He believes he can.

Diggs said he received the game ball and called his teammates a group of fighters. After he scored, he was mobbed by teammates and had a hard time breathing with some of the heavier Vikings laying on him. patriots_039_a40c16664832efe5-180x180

It all comes down to how the Panthers are helping Newton. Or whether they ever do.

The league office may have to weigh in (again) on how fast Newton cleared concussion protocol after that aforementioned pancake hit. That’s an old story, too: the blind spot about how bad a beating he’s taking and whether it’s ever enough to take him out of a game, at any point of the season, much less a playoff game.

A bombshell ESPN report said Belichick is considering leaving the Pats after owner Robert Kraft forced him to trade backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo largely because of Tom Brady’s insecurity. Belichick was an assistant coach with the Giants from 1979-90, serving as defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells for the last six years of that run.

The source had not spoken to Belichick since the ESPN story broke, but said he is certain, The Giants are the only place he wants to be.

Belichick exuded rare emotion as NFL Films documented him before a Patriots-Giants preseason game in 2009, the final year of Giants Stadium.

This is a great organization, said a teary-eyed Belichick, per the Daily News. It’s hard not to get choked up about it. I loved it here. I loved it here.

We caution that while a Belichick/Giants reunion makes sense in the wake of the ESPN report, it’s only speculation at this point.

If football isn’t in the cards for Favre’s offspring, what sport is?

I’m not going to encourage them to play [football]. I’m not going to discourage [them], Favre said. But I say this to everyone who will listen: if my grandsons were to say, and they call me Paw-Paw, if they were to say Paw-Paw, will you be my caddy in golf, I think I’m going to do golf instead of football, I would be much more happy, satisfied and excited by that than by them playing football.

Every tackle I would be cringing, hoping they get up and not shaking their head and saying they got a headache. But the likelihood of that happening by them playing football is very high. So I’d much rather them choose a safer route.

We thought it would be fun to record what an offseason of training looks like for a 40-year-old athlete, Brady told the Times in an email.

While Patriots coach Bill Belichick will be almost completely absent from the series, there is footage of Brady speaking with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels through video chat.

Tuesday, Brady took aim at the ESPN report detailing unrest in the New England franchise involving its legendary quarterback, Belichick and Patriots owner Robert Kraft, calling it far from any truth that I know.patriots_018_7b0b1a017dd7d943-180x180

ESPN’s Sean McDonough basically confirmed that Jon Gruden’s going to the Raiders

For two years he was the backup to Jalen Hurd, despite averaging 2.31 more yards per touch than the starter. Of course it was frustrating. But Kamara still believed that wherever he ended up in the NFL, whatever round he was drafted, it would work out. As long as I get the chance, he would tell friends before the draft, I’ll shine.

At Tennessee, Kamara had gotten his hair dreaded and begun to wear the gold grill in his mouth during games. He had discovered his own vibe, figured out who he was. And he had learned that the more he could simply be himself, the better he played.

The last wild-card game is the divisional matchup from the NFC South between the Carolina Panthers and the New Orleans Saints. During the regular season, eight of Carolina’s games were predicted correctly by AccuScore, while the accuracy in the Saints games was better with 11 correct games. In the third meeting between the two, New Orleans has 61-percent win probability. The Saints don’t have any big injury concerns and have beat the Panthers twice already. In fact, when AccuScore simulated the entire NFL playoffs, the computer picked the Saints to make Super Bowl 52.

A source told PFT that the Steelers would be undefeated if they were coached by Bill Belichick.

Hyperbole aside, complaints about the job Tomlin did in Pittsburgh’s 45-42 loss to Jacksonville in Sunday’s divisional playoff game are legit.

The source pointed specifically to the final 47 seconds of the game, when the Steelers decided against kicking a field goal to narrow the lead to seven and then attempt onside kick. They scored a touchdown as time expired, giving themselves no chance to get the ball back and tie the game.

While that was one of many calls Tomlin and his staff may want back, the gripes from the team’s investors run deeper than the loss to the Jaguars – for example, there was Antonio Brown going Facebook Live in the locker room while Tomlin dressed down the Patriots last postseason; and last week, Le’Veon Bell suggested in a tweet that a win over Jacksonville was a surety.

Smith’s priorities are understandably and appropriately elsewhere with his wife undergoing treatment, so handing personnel control to someone else may be a sound decision for all involved with the Texans.

At 12-3, the Case Keenum-led Vikings already clinched a first-round bye and are favorites to appear in the Super Bowl for the first time since 1976. The Vikings could become the first team to play a Super Bowl in its home stadium.giants_108

The SpongeBob SquarePants uniforms are great for a number of reasons, starting with the fact that Emeka Okafor is wearing one.

Yes, you read that headline correctly. The best idea you didn’t know you needed in your life is being executed by the Delaware 87ers Wednesday night when the team takes the court in SpongeBob SquarePants uniforms to play the Erie BayHawks on Nickelodeon Night.

At the moment, only three NHL players hail from Washington state: Lightning forward Tyler Johnson, Capitals winger T.J. Oshie, and Hurricanes center Derek Ryan. Less than 10,000 players were registered with USA Hockey last season, most of them ages 19 and over. But like the Golden Knights’ arrival has infused energy into Las Vegas’ youth scene, an NHL Seattle franchise hopes for similar results. “In the short term, it’s not automatic,” says Russ Farwell, the Thunderbirds’ GM. “You either have to have a winning team, or market really well and have a long-term plan to build fans. We don’t have that in Seattle.”

As the year ended, the NFL announced a groundbreaking deal that addresses what is, in my opinion, its primary challenge for the future: attracting and maintaining younger viewers. The $500 million streaming deal with Verizon is primarily about mobile, the mantra for younger (and some older) viewers. The Verizon deal, along with the Disney-Fox acquisition that gives ESPN an ability to be a vertical provider like Netflix, is a harbinger of things to come in sports media. And the NFL has clearly tried to position itself to take advantage of new media, having already enticed Twitter (2016) and Amazon (2017) to sample NFL game programming.

“When you play and compete at the highest level there are no guarantees ever,” Bradley said after returning from Trinidad. “Even after last year’s final, the only chance you have is to give everything you have and spill your heart and your soul into something, and even by doing that there’s no guarantee that you get anything out on the other side. The matter of Christie v. NCAA came before the Court as the first order of business Monday morning.

In the off moments when they weren’t shooting the King’s soldiers, dumping crates of tea into harbors and otherwise committing treason, the Founding Fathers were quite the bunch of gambling men. They all bet the ponies. (In The Daily Beast, author and historian Philip Smucker wrote about a horse race in which an entry owned by George Washington beat one owned by Thomas Jefferson.) They bet on cards and they bet on anything that moved, including fighting cocks, an extraordinarily grubby and bloody exercise that the landed gentry did not speak of among themselves, except when divvying up the evening’s process.

It didn’t always work out well for them. James Madison’s stepson, John Payne Todd, gambled away not only his fortune, but his indulgent stepdad’s as well. Madison wound up having to mortgage the family estate to pay off his stepson’s debts. The Continental Army was kept afloat partly by a series of national lotteries. It is an essential part of the American character to make someone else’s money your money with as little physical labor as possible. So, when Washington superlawyer Ted Olson began his presentation before the Supreme Court of the United States by taking us all back to the fights over federal and state sovereignty, it was hard not to imagine the spirits of the Founders, laying odds on whether the state of New Jersey or the NCAA would win the case.

At issue was the state of New Jersey’s desire to legalize betting on sports events. In 1992, at the behest of almost every important sports organization in the country, Congress passed something called the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. PASPA—Washington travels on its anagrams—left sports betting intact where it already existed but forbade it everywhere else. It did, however, leave a window of time within which New Jersey could join the other states, but New Jersey blew that deadline.

Another player with a crazy story is Michael Orris, who signed with the Agua Caliente Clippers this week after finishing a multi-stop college career at South Dakota State last year. He’d recently left Iceland and was working a shift wiping down tables at a restaurant when he got the call. He played Wednesday at the showcase without even a name on his jersey. He’s not an NBA prospect, but he’s the kind of guy you want to root for.

NFL takes over investigation of Panthers owner Jerry Richardson

The NFL has stepped in and taken over the investigation into allegations of workplace misconduct against Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy announced Sunday.

According to ESPN, the league will retain an outside counsel to conduct the probe after the team announced its investigation into Richardson on Friday. The Panthers had initially retained Quinn Emanuel Urquhart and Sullivan, LLP.

Panthers spokesman Steven Drummond said the team is committed to the investigation and working toward providing a comfortable workplace environment.
