Dolphins reportedly interested in RB DeMarco Murray

By moving up from No. 6 to No. 3 in the 2018 NFL Draft in a blockbuster deal with the Colts, the Jets are making loud and clear their intentions to find and select their next franchise quarterback. If the Browns, as widely expected, take Sam Darnold with the first-overall pick, the Jets are assured of getting whoever they like best among Josh Rosen, Josh Allen or even Baker Mayfield — as long as the Giants at No. 2 do not take him.

The Colts, who held the No. 3 pick, have Andrew Luck and did not need a quarterback. The Jets can sit tight at No. 3 — as long some other team does not trade with the Giants to get up to No. 2 to land a quarterback. If the Giants are taking a quarterback, they are staying put at No. 2 and taking him.

Here is where Giants general manager Dave Gettleman can have some fun. If he wants to make the Jets believe he is open for business on a trade-down, he should rent out three billboards outside East Rutherford, N.J., advertising that intention. If the Jets take the bait, perhaps they will be inclined to make a trade with the Giants, moving up one spot, to get to No. 2 to ensure they get their guy.

The move gives the Cowboys $1.4 million in cap space and allows Scandrick an opportunity to find a new home.

Scandrick, 31, has requested his release with the Cowboys going with a youth movement in the secondary with corners such as Jourdan Lewis and Chidobe Awuzie.

And the president tweeted this shortly after midnight Saturday morning.

It’s readily apparent why getting McCabe fired might send a message Trump likes. But might it also come back to bite Trump

Trump has now, after all, cemented the enemy status of a top-ranking official at the FBI (its No. 2) and onetime acting director. He previously did that by firing McCabe’s superior, former FBI director James B. Comey, and Comey has rewarded that decision by leaking unhelpful things and testifying about Trump in a negative light. He is now set to release a book.patriots_301

EJ Manuel was the first quarterback taken in the 2013 Draft and the only one in the first round.

That’s right: To be fair, Manuel went 25-6 at Florida State and won a bowl game in each of his four years there.

19. Paul DePodesta, chief strategy officer, Browns (NR): The former Mets personnel executive and baseball GM (a fictionalized version of whom was played by Jonah Hill in the “Moneyball” movie) tries to bring analytics to football with the league’s worst franchise — and the rest of the NFL will be watching. It also sounds like a good plot for “Moneyball 2,” actually.

Forgive my amateur sense of good Super Bowl TV pregame storytelling, but what a tale this would have made for NBC.

So many significant pieces were in place, right there in Minneapolis. Cris Collinsworth, who will call the game on NBC, was on that Bengals team. Esiason is there to be the analyst on on the radio version. Theirs is a shared bizarre experience worth a half hour show.

Additonally, Solomon Wilcots, a CBS analyst, was a Cincy starting defensive back. They were all easily accessible.

Taylor was heavily involved with the starters during the Titans’ dress rehearsal against the Bears. He received two carries totaling 7 yards and was the intended recipient of a reverse from Derrick Henry, but Henry got bills_005tackled before he could make the pitch to Taylor sweeping around in the other direction.

Taylor also helped the Titans convert a third-and-31 (!!!) by catching a seam route, breaking three tackles at once, then dragging a couple more defenders for more yards at the end of the play.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Christian Hackenberg looked not good for the Jets, serving up two pick-sixes to the Giants before giving way to Bryce Petty, who tossed two TDs. It was also a rough night for the Broncos, who saw Paxton Lynch (shoulder), Demaryius Thomas (groin), Zach Kerr (knee) and safety Will Parks (hip) leave the game against the Packers with injuries.

Dolphins (4-5): Miami gets mentioned solely because of its record in what’s shaping up to be a soft AFC wild-card bubble.

The Dolphins have lost three straight, two of them on the road by a combined score of 85-21. Miami also has the following teams remaining on its schedule: Patriots (twice), Bills (twice) and Chiefs. The outlook is bleak.

Raiders (4-5): Oakland also has a difficult slate remaining, starting with Sunday’s game against the Patriots in Mexico City and continuing with the Chiefs, Cowboys and Eagles down the line.

Ravens (4-5): Baltimore has lost 3 of 4, but the Ravens’ late bye week will have them rested up for a schedule that isn’t exactly taxing: Packers sans Aaron Rodgers, Texans, Lions, Steelers, Browns, Colts, Bengals.

Remember how Roethlisberger was carted off in the wild 2016 first-round game against Cincinnati with a shoulder injury and returned to lead the team to a victory, helped mightily by the Bengals’ discombobulation? Roethlisberger couldn’t even throw the ball down the field but managed to Willis Reed the Steelers to a win. This year, he’s healthy and has dangerous weapons.

His replacement, Tom Savage, has completed 82 of 149 passes (55 percent) for 869 yards, one touchdown and one interception for a 71.7 passer rating during his career. Any playoff hopes the Texans had went out the window as soon as Watson was ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Miami was the second-worst rushing team in the league before trading away Jay Ajayi to the Eagles. More indicative of its lackluster playoff chances: Miami’s gamble on Jay Cutler hasn’t worked out. His passer rating in a clean pocket is average (98.2) and becomes worse than average under pressure (63.6). He is ranked 26th out of 33 passers per ESPN’s QBR rating, which does not build confidence the Dolphins can outperform their projected win total of 7.2.

I can’t take it anymore. I don’t really know. I can’t pinpoint why right now. Part of it is the handling of the [Kirk] Cousins situation. I mean, I think he’s good enough to keep around, when you look around the league and see what you could have otherwise. I think he’s way, way, way better than many other options. And it just seems like if we’re not going to [keep him], then what’s this all about?

Two teams promoted their own offensive coordinators: the New York Giants with Ben McAdoo and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with Dirk Koetter.

Three hired someone else’s offensive coordinator: the Cleveland Browns with Cincinnati’s Hue Jackson, the Dolphins with Chicago’s Adam Gase and the Philadelphia Eagles with Kansas City’s Doug Pederson. The 49ers hired Chip Kelly, the offensive-minded head coach fired by the Eagles. The Tennessee Titans made their former offensive assistant turned interim coach, Mike Mularkey, their full-time coach.

This time, facing a tough third-and-17, USC opts to run the ball in effort to not lose any extra yards before they punt. Foster spots something he must have recognized from film study, because he quickly swaps position with his fellow linebacker before charging down to the line of scrimmage. Foster bursts through the line of scrimmage, forcing the pulling right guard to try to pick him up. The guard does his best to run Foster past the back, but Foster works around the guard and grabs on to the back, making the tackle for a loss.

The Titans’ schedule isn’t all that much harder. After Thursday night’s game in Pittsburgh, Tennessee gets a four-game stretch featuring the Colts, Texans, Cardinals and 49ers. At this point it’s safe to say that the Jacksonville-Tennessee division loser will claim one of the AFC’s wild-card spots, leaving the Bills and just about everyone else in the AFC to battle for the last one.

Frankly, the only team that we can probably eliminate from the AFC playoff race is winless Cleveland. Everyone else is within 2 1/2 games of the Bills, currently holding down the final wild-card spot. But these three are closest.

The Washington Redskins have the 17th overall pick, and nine other picks — a second-round selection, (49th) a third (81st), two fourth-rounders (114, 123), one fifth (154), two sixth-rounders (201, 209) and two seventh-round picks (220, 235).

How should the Redskins use those picks? Do they have to go defense? Should they add another running back, or a quarterback for the future? We hash it all out here in our final draft debate. Master, if you’re sitting there at 17, what’s your call?cowboys_030

It all comes down to how the Panthers are helping Newton. Or whether they ever do.

The league office may have to weigh in (again) on how fast Newton cleared concussion protocol after that aforementioned pancake hit. That’s an old story, too: the blind spot about how bad a beating he’s taking and whether it’s ever enough to take him out of a game, at any point of the season, much less a playoff game.

A bombshell ESPN report said Belichick is considering leaving the Pats after owner Robert Kraft forced him to trade backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo largely because of Tom Brady’s insecurity. Belichick was an assistant coach with the Giants from 1979-90, serving as defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells for the last six years of that run.

The source had not spoken to Belichick since the ESPN story broke, but said he is certain, The Giants are the only place he wants to be.

Belichick exuded rare emotion as NFL Films documented him before a Patriots-Giants preseason game in 2009, the final year of Giants Stadium.

This is a great organization, said a teary-eyed Belichick, per the Daily News. It’s hard not to get choked up about it. I loved it here. I loved it here.

We caution that while a Belichick/Giants reunion makes sense in the wake of the ESPN report, it’s only speculation at this point.

If football isn’t in the cards for Favre’s offspring, what sport is?

I’m not going to encourage them to play [football]. I’m not going to discourage [them], Favre said. But I say this to everyone who will listen: if my grandsons were to say, and they call me Paw-Paw, if they were to say Paw-Paw, will you be my caddy in golf, I think I’m going to do golf instead of football, I would be much more happy, satisfied and excited by that than by them playing football.

Every tackle I would be cringing, hoping they get up and not shaking their head and saying they got a headache. But the likelihood of that happening by them playing football is very high. So I’d much rather them choose a safer route.

We thought it would be fun to record what an offseason of training looks like for a 40-year-old athlete, Brady told the Times in an email.

While Patriots coach Bill Belichick will be almost completely absent from the series, there is footage of Brady speaking with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels through video chat.

Tuesday, Brady took aim at the ESPN report detailing unrest in the New England franchise involving its legendary quarterback, Belichick and Patriots owner Robert Kraft, calling it far from any truth that I know.patriots_018_7b0b1a017dd7d943-180x180

ESPN’s Sean McDonough basically confirmed that Jon Gruden’s going to the Raiders

For two years he was the backup to Jalen Hurd, despite averaging 2.31 more yards per touch than the starter. Of course it was frustrating. But Kamara still believed that wherever he ended up in the NFL, whatever round he was drafted, it would work out. As long as I get the chance, he would tell friends before the draft, I’ll shine.

At Tennessee, Kamara had gotten his hair dreaded and begun to wear the gold grill in his mouth during games. He had discovered his own vibe, figured out who he was. And he had learned that the more he could simply be himself, the better he played.

The last wild-card game is the divisional matchup from the NFC South between the Carolina Panthers and the New Orleans Saints. During the regular season, eight of Carolina’s games were predicted correctly by AccuScore, while the accuracy in the Saints games was better with 11 correct games. In the third meeting between the two, New Orleans has 61-percent win probability. The Saints don’t have any big injury concerns and have beat the Panthers twice already. In fact, when AccuScore simulated the entire NFL playoffs, the computer picked the Saints to make Super Bowl 52.

A source told PFT that the Steelers would be undefeated if they were coached by Bill Belichick.

Hyperbole aside, complaints about the job Tomlin did in Pittsburgh’s 45-42 loss to Jacksonville in Sunday’s divisional playoff game are legit.

The source pointed specifically to the final 47 seconds of the game, when the Steelers decided against kicking a field goal to narrow the lead to seven and then attempt onside kick. They scored a touchdown as time expired, giving themselves no chance to get the ball back and tie the game.

While that was one of many calls Tomlin and his staff may want back, the gripes from the team’s investors run deeper than the loss to the Jaguars – for example, there was Antonio Brown going Facebook Live in the locker room while Tomlin dressed down the Patriots last postseason; and last week, Le’Veon Bell suggested in a tweet that a win over Jacksonville was a surety.

Smith’s priorities are understandably and appropriately elsewhere with his wife undergoing treatment, so handing personnel control to someone else may be a sound decision for all involved with the Texans.

At 12-3, the Case Keenum-led Vikings already clinched a first-round bye and are favorites to appear in the Super Bowl for the first time since 1976. The Vikings could become the first team to play a Super Bowl in its home stadium.giants_108

I’m certainly not holding my breath here.

As the year ended, the NFL announced a groundbreaking deal that addresses what is, in my opinion, its primary challenge for the future: attracting and maintaining younger viewers. The $500 million streaming deal with Verizon is primarily about mobile, the mantra for younger (and some older) viewers. The Verizon deal, along with the Disney-Fox acquisition that gives ESPN an ability to be a vertical provider like Netflix, is a harbinger of things to come in sports media. And the NFL has clearly tried to position itself to take advantage of new media, having already enticed Twitter (2016) and Amazon (2017) to sample NFL game programming.

“When you play and compete at the highest level there are no guarantees ever,” Bradley said after returning from Trinidad. “Even after last year’s final, the only chance you have is to give everything you have and spill your heart and your soul into something, and even by doing that there’s no guarantee that you get anything out on the other side. And so when things don’t go your way—when there is adversity—you have no choice but to respond to keep going, to keep working, to use it as motivation and that’s what I’ll do.”

He continued, “I can promise everybody that in no way is the disappointment of not qualifying for a World Cup going to play into what were doing here. … You know we’ve had an incredible season. We’ve won two trophies, and we are ready to give everything to make sure we lift the third.”

The Raiders have regressed to the mean, but they just proved there’s some nastiness left in the tank.

If you’re reading this column still, you’re inching closer to the championship. Whether you won the first round of your playoffs in Week 14, are in the second week of a two-week semifinal or if you earned a first round bye, you’ve made it this far and deserve praise for as much. The reality for most people that have made it this far is that you’re not going to rock the boat with your lineup all that much — trust your studs, play them each week.

Week 14 brought the all-too-uncommon reality of football in the form of a season-ending injury to MVP-frontrunner Carson Wentz, who suffered the left knee injury in a thrilling win over the Los Angeles Rams. Philadelphia’s quarterback may have been the primary reason your squad has made it this far — he’s been just that good.

They’ll need all of it the rest of the way to save an empty season, but between Del Rio, Carr, Lynch and Mack, they have the leaders to get it done.

The Colts can’t stop the run. The Bills can’t stop the run. One team has LeSean McCoy, and the other has venerable Frank Gore. Should Tyrod Taylor miss the game for Buffalo, it won’t be easy with Nathan Peterman. But expect the hosts to keep it simple and feed McCoy often to keep their front from being exposed by Gore, Marlon Mack and some Jacoby Brissett. A lot of running, a lot of field goals, a little Bills victory.

The Raiders’ offense now has Marshawn Lynch going, and they should get back both Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper, who burned the Chiefs in the first meeting. But the Chiefs, despite their loss at the Jets, also revived their passing game with Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill.

Even amid a season in which the Giants have fallen from presumed Super Bowl contenders to challengers for the first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, McAdoo was blasted, here and elsewhere, for his handling of Manning. (And no, Giants co-owner John Mara doesn’t get a pass from SN.)
