The SpongeBob SquarePants uniforms are great for a number of reasons, starting with the fact that Emeka Okafor is wearing one.

Yes, you read that headline correctly. The best idea you didn’t know you needed in your life is being executed by the Delaware 87ers Wednesday night when the team takes the court in SpongeBob SquarePants uniforms to play the Erie BayHawks on Nickelodeon Night.

But like the Golden Knights’ arrival has infused energy into Las Vegas’ youth scene, an NHL Seattle franchise hopes for similar results. “In the short term, it’s not automatic,” says Russ Farwell, the Thunderbirds’ GM. “You either have to have a winning team, or market really well and have a long-term plan to build fans. The matter of Christie v. NCAA came before the Court as the first order of business Monday morning.

In the off moments when they weren’t shooting the King’s soldiers, dumping crates of tea into harbors and otherwise committing treason, the Founding Fathers were quite the bunch of gambling men. They all bet the ponies. (In The Daily Beast, author and historian Philip Smucker wrote about a horse race in which an entry owned by George Washington beat one owned by Thomas Jefferson.) They bet on cards and they bet on anything that moved, including fighting cocks, an extraordinarily grubby and bloody exercise that the landed gentry did not speak of among themselves, except when divvying up the evening’s process.

It didn’t always work out well for them. James Madison’s stepson, John Payne Todd, gambled away not only his fortune, but his indulgent stepdad’s as well. Madison wound up having to mortgage the family estate to pay off his stepson’s debts. The Continental Army was kept afloat partly by a series of national lotteries. It is an essential part of the American character to make someone else’s money your money with as little physical labor as possible. So, when Washington superlawyer Ted Olson began his presentation before the Supreme Court of the United States by taking us all back to the fights over federal and state sovereignty, it was hard not to imagine the spirits of the Founders, laying odds on whether the state of New Jersey or the NCAA would win the case.

At issue was the state of New Jersey’s desire to legalize betting on sports events. In 1992, at the behest of almost every important sports organization in the country, Congress passed something called the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. PASPA—Washington travels on its anagrams—left sports betting intact where it already existed but forbade it everywhere else. It did, however, leave a window of time within which New Jersey could join the other states, but New Jersey blew that deadline.

Another player with a crazy story is Michael Orris, who signed with the Agua Caliente Clippers this week after finishing a multi-stop college career at South Dakota State last year. He’d recently left Iceland and was working a shift wiping down tables at a restaurant when he got the call. He played Wednesday at the showcase without even a name on his jersey. He’s not an NBA prospect, but he’s the kind of guy you want to root for.

Mitchell blew by J.R. Smith and made a layup in traffic over James with 35 seconds remaining to give the Jazz a 100-97 lead.

James had 29 points, eight rebounds and six assists as his personal losing streak at Utah extended to seven games, four of them with Cleveland. The Cavs’ three-game losing streak is their second this season.

James then missed a layup, and Utah finished off the game from the free-throw line. The Jazz snapped a three-game losing streak.

It should be no surprise that Mayfield is the top-rated prospect across all four teams.

Much has been made of his projection to the NFL, and his Heisman Trophy has almost been use against him based on recent Heisman struggles in the NFL.

But Mayfield has the physical and, more importantly, mental make-up to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. He throws with great confidence, timing and velocity on interior throws, rare for a smaller quarterback and something Drew Brees and Russell Wilson do well (and Johnny Manziel didn’t). Despite being viewed as a scrambling quarterback, Mayfield has proficient footwork, playing with quiet feet in the pocket and consistently playing on balance and in control inside and outside the pocket.

Alex Smith will have plenty of teams bidding for him. I expect Cleveland and Washington (if it loses Cousins) to be the favorites. Case Keenum is expected to get a multiyear offer from the Vikings, but the Bills and Chiefs (if Smith leaves) are expected to have interest.

Some underappreciated draft prospects who could rise to the first round: N.C. State running back Jaylen Samuels, Maryland wide receiver DJ Moore, UTEP guard Will Hernandez, Rutgers defensive end Kemoko Turay, North Carolina cornerback M.J. Stewart and San Diego State cornerback Kameron Kelly.

On the AFC side, I can’t see the inconsistent Chiefs as a final four team although they should beat the offensively challenged Titans this week (Tennessee would need an outstanding performance throwing and running from quarterback Marcus Mariota to win, and that has rarely been the case for him in a less-productive third season). I’ll take the Bills over the Jaguars because I don’t trust Blake Bortles to win a big game and his play has gone downhill over the past few weeks.

Kansas City and Buffalo, or whoever emerges from these lackluster AFC wild-card games, don’t have much of a chance of winning in Foxborough or Pittsburgh even though the Patriots did lose to the Chiefs at home in the season opener.

“This is what I’ve always wanted. This is what I’ve dreamed of,” he said.

Judge and Stanton will become just the second pair of teammates to have each hit 50 homers in the previous season. The only other teammates to do so were Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle of the 1962 Yankees.

Which picks in the previous two years should have been made differently so that the Browns, for example, would have beaten the Packers? Or the other four teams that won by exactly three points? Wentz or Watson, it seems obvious. But realistically, that might make Jackson (and Brown) maybe 5-24, or 6-23.

They were high-risk, high-reward deals, for a boatload of picks. If the picks pan out under Dorsey … well, good for him, and good choice of jobs.

The Browns have players, and they have a few chances to win. They’ll get more. Dorsey’s time to show how good he is at getting more is coming fast.

But considering he’s taking over a winless team, he still has a decent head start.

Unless the Saints finish 1-2 to drop to 10-6, they won’t need to sweat out whether they will need to fall back on a wild-card berth. That’s because it’s impossible for the Panthers to finish 12-4 and the Falcons to end up 11-5 because they play each other in Week 17. The Saints’ worst nightmare is losing again to the Falcons, the Panthers fading hard to 9-7 or worse and the Seahawks surging to the NFC West title ahead of the Rams. In that case, should the Saints, Falcons and Rams all go 11-5, the Saints would lose the head-to-head tiebreakers and be the odd team out.

The Falcons’ win was a bad development for the Panthers (8-4), despite the fact the result allows them to move back into a virtual tie for first place with the Saints with a home win over the Vikings on Sunday. Having already lost twice to the Saints, the Panthers need to finish a full game ahead to win the South, and that likely means 12-4, and that means winning out. lakers_017

Harden cooks Vonleh for easy layupJames Harden puts the moves on Noah Vonleh and sinks an uncontested layup in the fourth quarter.

Paul drove for a layup the next possession, blowing by Portland point guard Damian Lillard, who had a spectacular offensive performance (35 points and nine made 3-pointers, which tied a franchise record) but got picked on repeatedly on the other end of the floor. Paul dished out dimes the next three trips: a feed to P.J. Tucker for a fast-break layup off a steal, a bullet to Trevor Ariza for a transition 3 that gave the Rockets the lead for good and a drop-off to Tucker for a layup after driving past Lillard.

The Blazers, eager not to finish a home stand 0-4, were aggressive early, as Lillard hit two 3-pointers but also drew two fouls during the first 3 minutes. Midway through the first quarter, Lillard stepped in front of Paul and earned a charging foul, touching off a battle of words that resulted in technicals to Portland’s Meyers Leonard and Paul.

Lillard’s 3-pointer gave Portland its largest lead of the first half at 57-46, but Houston outscored the Blazers 16-5 during the final 5:37 to pull even at 62 at halftime.

Shazier was moving his arms and hands, but there was concern because of minimal movement in his legs.

The Bengals had the ball for the first time when Shazier was injured and capitalized on a Ben Roethlisberger interception with a 35-yard Randy Bullock field goal with 10:48 remaining in the first quarter.

The Steelers did not immediately provide a status for Shazier, but did confirm a back injury. After a brief evaluation in the locker room, Shazier was transported to a nearby hospital. He was ruled out for the remainder of the game and the Steelers said there would be no further updates until after the game.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said following Pittsburgh’s 23-20 comeback win he did not have an update on Shazier. He did say the 25-year-old linebacker was “receiving the necessary medical attention.”

NFL players break away from coalition founded by Malcolm Jenkins, Anquan Boldin

The NFL is no closer to agreeing with players about a universally accepted pre-game national anthem protocol than it was when the controversy initially began in 2016.

The organizers did plenty to conceal the operation. Money to the pools, all in cash, was asked to be addressed to Green River in Plainview, New York. A mortgage brokerage called Green River Capital is in Plainview, but neither man works there. The mailing address provided corresponds to a box inside a UPS store.

The Chiefs are in trouble — Once thought to be a lock for the playoffs, the Chiefs (6-5) are now in danger of losing their grip on the AFC West. The last NFL team to lose after starting 5-0 have now lost five of its last six games.

Philadelphia center Joel Embiid has missed three of the team’s six games in December. The 76ers (13-13) are 1-5 this month, and they have lost four straight after a 131-124 defeat at New Orleans on Sunday.

“We have to be more consistent and make the right plays every time,” 76ers rookie Ben Simmons said. “When we make mistakes and do not have guys like Joel and (Robert Covington) to make up for it, it gets tough. We have to just come together as a team and get through it.”

The Browns sent Duke Johnson to chip on Ngakoue’s outside shoulder this time to help Drango, but even though Ngakoue obviously saw Johnson coming, he continued on the same track. Just as it appeared they were going to hit each other, Ngakoue stopped abruptly and looped inside.royals_016

DeAndre Jordan had 14 points and 17 rebounds for the Clippers.

This has been brewing over the past few years, as it seems Manning has made the conscious decision to avoid getting hit at all costs. Maybe it was a general business decision, sage advice passed down from Big Bro Peyton as a way for an immobile man to extend a career. Or maybe Eli just lost faith in his physical ability to avoid pressure or hang in the pocket and absorb a blow. Either way, the result has been multiple instances per game in which he hurls the ball into the ground, or curls up into the fetal position as pass rushers approach.

DeAndre Jordan had 14 points and 17 rebounds for the Clippers. Their backups outscored Toronto’s reserves 50-17, led by Harrell and Lou Williams, who also had 17 points.

“Our second group tries to bring a lot of energy and play as hard as we can,” Harrell said. “We know we’re going to make some mistakes, we know we have some younger guys who aren’t accustomed to playing this amount of minutes. Everyone has that next man up mentality.”

Buffalo had a good game plan in place and the team’s only touchdown of the game was a result of rolling Taylor to his left before hitting rookie receiver Zay Jones in the end zone.

“No, there isn’t anything I would do differently,” Jeter said after the trade became official on Monday.

During a half-hour conference call, Jeter tried to explain his thinking for trading Stanton, who controlled the process because he is owed $295 million over the next 10 years and could veto any trade. Jeter said Stanton made it clear that he did not want to be part of rebuild, so it was best for the organization to move on.panthers_030

The Saints are the big surprise in the lead entering Week 11.

The run defense numbers still look bad, but that’s because of major damage done earlier in the season, mostly from the games against the Titans, Jets and Rams. Things have dramatically changed with the simple acquisition of tackle Marcell Dareus in a trade with Buffalo. Jacksonville gave up 139 yards per game rushing on average before he arrived for Week 9. Since then, it’s been 116 total allowed in two games.

Dareus provided a big boost and more refreshment to the interior rotation to play better off ends Calais Campbell and Yannick Ngakoue. The depth is improved, providing more help for the second level to clean up. Going position-by-position, it’s now hard to find a real hole in Jacksonvile’s defense.

Even now, he says his longtime preference for Nike on the court also went into his decision to pick Kentucky over rival Louisville. Fox signed with Nike this spring, becoming the first rookie to finalize a traditional deal. According to industry sources, Fox’s deal is for five years, worth roughly $2 million per year.

They’re the hottest team in the league but are up only a half-game on the Panthers thanks to their win in Carolina in Week 3. The Falcons, still far from hungover as the reigning NFC champions, are only two games behind.

The three South rivals all enjoyed blowout wins against other playoff contenders in Week 10, with an average margin of victory of 27 points. That sets up for an epic finish to the division race, even with New Orleans sitting pretty. Neither Carolina nor Atlanta, the previous two division champs who went all the way to the Super Bowl, can be ruled out.

However, despite the previous bluster between the two players — or more accurately between Fox and Ball’s father — Fox has chosen to downplay any comparisons between his traditional role at Nike and Ball’s unique route, signing with a family brand where his 16-year-old brother already has a signature shoe.nike_steelers_2237

The 13 players keep their bonuses from the Braves, must obtain new representatives and will be free to negotiate as free agents with other teams from Dec. 5 through Jan. 15.

Derrius Guice, RB, LSU — Guice ran for 147 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries as LSU rolled to a 33-10 win over Arkansas. The 5-11, 212-pound junior is on the cusp of eclipsing 1,000 yards for the second straight year and will likely follow former LSU running back Leonard Fournette to the NFL next spring.

Josh Jackson, CB, Iowa — Jackson might be the top cornerback in the draft and is the front-runner for the Jim Thorpe Award. The 6-1, 192-pound junior was the only reason the Hawkeyes scored in the blowout loss in Madison. Jackson had a pair of pick-sixes to account for both of Iowa’s touchdowns and added a forced fumble. He now has a nation-leading seven interceptions, five of which have come in the last two weeks.

It’s a stark difference from this point of the season two years ago, when the NFC fielded only five clubs above .500 while the AFC had six. Add the total of seven winning AFC teams through Week 10 last year, and the conference overall is experiencing its worst three-year stretch since the NFL adopted an eight-division format in 2002.

Now in Sacramento — one of four NBA teams with purple in their color palette — Fox plans to wear several models of Bryant’s signature Nike line, which frequently were made available in the Lakers’ particular shade of purple. This season he primarily has worn a combination of the two most recent Kobe AD models, but his brother is already hunting down rare older Kobe colorways in Kings hues, as Fox is looking to once again turn heads with his footwear.nike_steelers_2107
