Lamar Jackson opted out of 40-yard dash at NFL Combine due to WR talk
Lamar Jackson would have been the fastest quarterback at the NFL Combine, but he decided not to run the 40-yard dash. He participated in all of the throwing drills, but his decision to partcipated in the 40 left some analysts curious.
Speaking to NFL Network’s NFL Now crew, Jackson admitted the recent talk of him playing wide receiver led to him not wanting to run.
Lamar Jackson has said no one asked him to do WR drills. But the requests were, in fact, made. Three more: DBs Marcus Allen, Terrell Edmunds and Derwin James were asked to do LB drills.

While Jackson didn’t take part in the 40-yard dash at the Combine, he did say he was going to run it at his Louisville pro day. The QB also said if he had to predict his 40 time, he says he would have run in the 4.3 range, says he likely would have matched a 4.38.
Louisville’s pro day takes place on March 29th, so we’ll know for sure by then.
After measuring in at 6-feet, 233 pounds, Barkley started off his workouts getting everyone’s attention when he did 29 reps at 225 lbs. Barkley and Nick Chubb, who also had 29 bench press reps, led all running backs but more impressive than that, they both had more reps than all but five of the 36 offensive linemen at the combine this year.
Barkley followed up Friday with even more impressive performances, posting a 41-inch vertical jump and ran a 4.40-second 40-yard dash on his first attempt.
To put all of his workouts in perspective, according to NFL Research, the only player with more than 25 bench press reps and a Authentic Robby Fabbri Jersey vertical jump higher than 40 inches at the 2017 Combine went as the No. 1 overall pick, which was defensive end Myles Garrett who had 33 reps and a 41-inch vertical.

Adding in the 40-yard dash, NFL Research also noted that there are only two players to weigh over 230 lbs, run the dash in 4.40 seconds or faster, and vertical jump 40-inches or higher at the combine since 2003. Vernon Davis was the other to do so in 2006.
Comparing Barkley to some of the top athletes of the NFL, when Joe Thomas went through the combine, he had 28 reps. DeSean Jackson’s 10-yard split was 1.55 seconds (Barkley was 1.54). Devin Hester was 4.43 seconds in the 40-yard dash while Julio Jones’ vertical jump was 38.5 inches.
